BARRIERS THAT DIVIDE, BRIDGES THAT UNITE

Over the years, East Harlem has seen many faces. Our particular story of interest begins around the turn of the twentieth century. It was at this point that a great wave of Russian Jews and southern Italian immigrants made East Harlem their home. The neighborhood soon became dubbed "El Barrio" by a new wave of Puerto Ricans who came to the neighborhood and made it their own. Nowadays, East Harlem or El Barrio still retains its Latino roots and remnants of its European ancestors with more groups added to the mix even still. Triumph and tribulation have also accompanied the many faces of El Barrio through the years, further contributing to this flavorful and unique neighborhood. Our website hopes to reveal the barriers that have confronted and divided the diverse people of this El Barrio as well as the bridges that have helped them cope with and overcome the barriers.
